Have you ever cradled a warm cup of coffee and wondered about the journey it took to reach your hands? Behind every handmade ceramic mug lies a slow, thoughtful process filled with intention, skill, and a touch of magic. In a world of mass production, choosing handcrafted pottery means choosing authenticity, sustainability, and art.

1. It Starts with Quality Clay

The process begins with selecting the right clay. At Clay & Glaze, we use premium stoneware clay known for its durability and natural texture. The choice of clay influences the final strength, weight, and look of each piece of handmade pottery.

2. Forming the Mug by Hand

Whether shaped on the potter’s wheel or hand-built, the mug starts to take form through practiced hands and essential pottery tools. From pulling the walls to attaching a handle, every step is intentional—designed for comfort and aesthetic appeal.

3. Natural Drying Process

After shaping, the mug is left to dry slowly and evenly. This stage is crucial to avoid cracks and ensure durability. Drying can take several days, and patience is key in creating lasting ceramic products.

4. Bisque Firing: The First Kiln Journey

Once dried, the mug enters the kiln for the first time—called bisque firing—at around 900°C. This step transforms soft clay into a hard but porous form, setting the foundation for glazing.

5. Glazing: The Art of Color & Texture

Now comes the magic touch. Glazes are applied by dipping, brushing, or pouring, depending on the design. This step defines the mug’s final look—whether a glossy blue, a matte neutral, or a speckled rustic finish. No two pieces of handmade pottery are exactly alike.

6. Final High-Temperature Firing

The glazed mug returns to the kiln, this time at about 1250°C. This firing vitrifies the clay and glaze, sealing the piece and making it food-safe, microwave-safe, and dishwasher-friendly.

Each mug is inspected, base-sanded, and approved before it's ready for your home. Our artisans ensure every detail meets our standards of quality and beauty.
